BENALPA PROFILE

In the last 21 one year’s Somalia faced a lot of internal conflicts. After collapsing of the national government that caused a lot of destruction, many problems has arisen, which badly effected livestock sector especially, the nomads who usually seeks pasture and water to their animals. Wildlife, which was one of the economic industries of our country, has been affected. As well great number of wild live fled from country entering into the neighboring countries for their safety.

Despite all kinds of destructions and devastations in the community and their basic resources, Benadir Livestock Professionals Association (BENALPA) managed to take its social responsibility to contribute to solutions of the mentioned problems and vowed to support live stockowners. In the beginning of 2002 some Vet Professionals gathered to form a professional association that can contribute in the development of livestock sector especially in EX-Benadir zone (the lower shabelle middle shabelle and Benadir region). Then BENALPA firstly came out from this initiative.

BENALPA was officially inaugurated in Mogadishu on April 18, 2002 and it will be a member of Somali Livestock Professionals Forum (SLPF) at national level when this institution emerging.

BENALPA has a work plan and networking strategies with other professional organizations. The activities of this association include delivery of vet services such as: Treatment and vaccination of animals in urban areas and also takes part in environmental conservation programs in south central Somalia


AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  • Further the advancement of Veterinary Science 
  • Safeguard the interest and welfare of its members
  • Promote the welfare and health of the livestock sector in Benadir Zone.
  • Seek and retain veterinary information and exchange relevant information with other veterinary organizations both zonal and international.
  • Provide professional and qualified veterinary services.
  • Awareness creation on Zoonotic diseases and there effect on human animate
  • Promote networking among organizations and institutions local and international.
  • Organize animal health and environmental protection programs.
  • Monitor and report disease outbreak’s
  • Develop linkages with public and private stakeholders in the livestock sector

BENALPA Vision Statement

BENALPA wants to be sustainable, respectable, capable, and committed professional association that provides comprehensive vet services to enhance both rural and urban live stock production system and environmental protection programs in order to upgrade well being of its members and socio-economic conditions of the society in EX-Banadir zone (the lower shabelle middle shabelle and Benadir region).

BENALPA is engaged in developing livestock health and production services as well as marketing systems and environmental protection with collaboration of key stakeholders in order to improve socio- economic conditions of rural and urban livestock community in Banadir zone.

  • Time critical Emergence Animal health treatment project for protection of Livestock from devastating of the livestock diseases for the poor pastoral and agro pastoral households in middle shabelle region 2011 Funded  by FAO
  • Selective treatment and mass PPR vaccination in Benadir region Mogadishu, Somali 2012 (Funded  by FAO)
  • Disease Surveillance, monitoring and reporting, 2011,2012,2013, funded by SAHP III
  • Capacity development on integrating emergence livestock interventions and reporting  for stabilization and recovery initiatives in Mogadishu           (Veterinary public health training) (Funded  by FAO) 2012
  • Supportive emergency mass treatment in Benadir region 2015 (Funded  by FAO)
  • Mass CCPP vaccination in Benadir region Mogadishu, Somalia 2013,2014, 2015,2017,2018
  • Supportive emergency mass treatment in Benadir region 2014

  • Fodder seed distribution and training to poor pastoral and agro pastoralist in M/shablle region Somlai 2017

ORGANS OF THE ASSOCIATION:

The organs of the Association include:

  1. The General Assembly, which is the highest organ of the Association in terms of legislation.
  2. The Executive Committee, which is the policy and decision-making body and it, constitutes one Chairperson, one Vice Chairperson, Executive director and the head of the departments.

The Executive Committee and its sub-committees will be composed of 7 members in total.
