    BENALPA launches vaccination and treatment campaign for Goat and Sheep

Thursday, May 9, 2013— The Banadir Livestock Professional Association (BENALPA) has launched today a vaccination and treatment campaign for more than 500,000 livestock comprising of goats and sheep against the dangerous diseases of PPR and POX in Benadir region and surrounding areas.

The program will be implemented by professional livestock doctors from BENALPA and last semester students from Faculty of Veterinary Science, Benadir University  and will proceed for one month from 6 May  - 9 June 2013.

Officials from the Somali Federal Government, livestock health organizations, UN and other honorable guests were the key participants in the program launching ceremony held at Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is funding the program.



Speaking at the opening occasion Dr. Nurto Sheikh Mohamed, Chairperson of BANELPA said that the livestock vaccination and treatment comes crucial time after discovering many livestock with disease symptoms like the dangerous diseases of PPR (Pests des petite ruminants) and Sheep/Gaot POX in some parts of South and Central regions of Somalia.

Drs. Nurto pointed out that campiagn actitivities will be initially conducted in the thrity days of the program and BENALPA doctors will reach all Benadir ragion and suburbs. She advised the doctors conducting the program to deal the livestock herders with good manner as they differ from city inhabitants and thanked to the FAO for supporting the program.

Additionally,  she mentioned that this project is intending to eradicate the PPR disease and Sheep and Goat POX, which is exposing huge burden for the livestock. On behalf of the livestock profesional associations which are operating in South and Central Zone Dr. Nurta Sheikh Mohamud said that they are ready to closely work with government and offer their services to the ministry of resources.


Mr. Yusuf Moalim Badiyow, an official from FAO speaking at the event indicated that FAO is supporting livestock  associations in South  Central Zone since the collapse of the government 1991 and they will contineu to support. He said that BANELPA organization is conducting good services relating with improving the health of the Somali livestock experiencing major problems and advised the doctors participating in the project to come up with humble and effective service.


National resources minister of the Somali Federal Government Mr. Abdirisak Omar Mohamed  has officially opened the campaign and welcomed this initiative as he emphasizes the importance of PPR and POX vaccination for the livestock in Benadir region.  The minister said that the vaccination and treatment of the Somali livestock will contribute the economy revival of the country as one of the his government’s top priorities.

He said that he is pleased with this project of vaccination and treating the livestock in Banadir region and its surroundings, and appreciated BANELPA saying its an agency assuming responsibility to salvage the Somali livestock. He also promised to work with livestock professionals associations for improvement of the livestock health.
