    BENALPA started livestock vaccination and treatment in Banadir region

    Sunday, March 25, 2012 (Xurmo) — The Banadir Livestock Professional Association (BENALP) has started program in Mogadishu and its surrounding treating for 75,000 livestock comprising of goats and sheep against the dangerous disease of PPR.

Sunday, March 25, 2012 (Xurmo) — The Banadir Livestock Professional Association (BENALP) has started program in Mogadishu and its surrounding treating for 75,000 livestock comprising of goats and sheep against the dangerous disease of PPR.

The program being conducted by trained doctors in livestock health will proceed for one month.

Officials from the Transitional Federal Government, livestock health organizations and other honorable guests were the key participants in the program launching ceremony. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is funding the program.

Drs. Nurto Sheikh Mohamed, Chairwoman of BANELPA speaking at the opening occasion said the livestock vaccination comes after finding out many livestock are daily dying from the dangerous PPR disease (Pests des petite ruminants) 

Drs. Nurto pointed out community awareness raising activity for the project will be initially conducted in the first days of the program. She advised the doctors conducting the program to deal the livestock herders with good manner as they differ from city inhabitants.

Similarly, she mentioned that this project is intending to eradicate the PPR disease, which is exposing huge burden for the livestock.

Additionally, Ahmed Takow Hassan, General Secretary   of BANELPA appreciated all organizers of the project and indicated the program will have more advantage for the Somali livestock herders that are experiencing problems to fight against the livestock diseases.

Mr. Fanah, official from FAO speaking at the event indicated that BANELPA organization are conducting good services relating with improving the health of the Somali livestock experiencing major problems and advised the doctors participating in the project to come up with humble service 

Ms. Sharifo from SHASP organization working on livestock health said they are pleased with this project treating the livestock in Banadir region and its surrounding, and appreciated BANELPA saying its an agency assuming responsibility to salvage the Somali livestock.

In conclusion, Mr. Abdirahman Sharif, Director, Department of livestock health, forestry and pasture expressed gratitude to all organizers of the one- month long project , and added the Somali government will take part in contributing to address other needs towards salvaging the Somali livestock.
