Sales of Somali livestock have seen a sudden increase over the past few days since Saudi Arabia lifted a nine-year ban on imports of the kind from Somalia last week.

Local traders claim sales have increased 10-fold in the market of Hargeisa, in Somaliland, where over 16,000 animals are now being sold daily, according to a report from IRIN News.

Pastoralism is one of the bases of livelihood in the region and the lift on import bans could help boost the local economy. Saudi Arabia had suspended the import of sheep, goats and cattle from Somalia in 2000 to prevent the spread of Rift Valley fever.
